Tuberculosis in cattle, camelids and farmed deer

Surveillance

The Norwegian cattle population has, apart from two single herd outbreaks in Sogn and Fjordane county in 1984 and 1986, been considered to be free of bovine tuberculosis since 1963. The disease has never been detected in camelids and in farmed deer in Norway.

Viral haemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) and infectious hematopoietic necrosis (IHN) are virus diseases causing heavy losses in salmonids. Norway currently has a free status for both diseases.

Viral infections in swine

The viral diseases AD, TGE, PRCV, PRRS and PED have never been detected in Norway. During 2009, the Norwegian pig population has several introductions of pandemic influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus, and since then specific antibodies against this virus has been detected in samples from approx. 50% of the pig herds tested.

Wild boar health surveillance

The Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI) is collaborating with the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) on a surveillance programme for wild boar in Norway with the aim of monitoring the incidence og infectious agents that are transmittable between wild boar, to domestic pigs and to humans.

Avian influenza in wild birds

In 2020, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was detected for the first time in wild birds in Norway. A number of detections of HPAI H5N1 in wild birds have been done so far this season (2021/2022).
